Fish Pond Filter Material Replacement Considerations

  Fish pond filtration materials like filter wool, ceramic rings, coral stone, far-infrared bacteria-absorbing houses, and other porous materials you use grow large communities of nitrifying bacteria, and are gathering places for millions of bacteria; so be careful not to destroy their habitat when replacing filtration materials;

   Some fishers have reported that the flow rate at the outlet of the fish tank will decrease after the fish tank filtration system has been running for some time. This is due to the blockage of the filtration system due to debris or other tiny particles (e.g., food scraps, feces, etc.).

At this point, it is recommended to look at the filter tank and remove the blockage out, replacing the fish tank filter material if necessary; doing so will ensure that the flow in the filter tank stays as it was;

When replacing fish pond filtration material, avoid replacing it all at once and keep some of it.

If there are two filters or filters in your fish tank, you can completely replace the filter material in one half of the tank and wait 2 to 3 weeks before replacing the fish tank filter material in the other half of the tank or filter.

If you are only using a single filter tank or filter, you should gently clean the fish tank filter material with stale water from the filter tank and then place the cleaned filter material back into the tank or filter.

Why do we not recommend replacing all the filter material at once? Because this would throw away millions of beneficial bacteria as well, so you have put your pond's koi at risk, and only a small percentage of the remaining beneficial bacteria can carry out nitrification, while the fish population remains the same. In this case, the nitrifying bacteria must grow back until they can carry all the koi again. This situation often leads to the "new pond symptom". It takes a long time to return to a normal state and is a serious survival test for the koi.

So, the key points for replacing filter media are summarized below:

First, coral stone, ceramic ring, activated carbon, bacteria-absorbing house, volcanic stone, Maifan stone and other fish pond biochemical filtration materials, it is recommended that every three months in batches to clean; every two years or so to replace;

Second, the fish pool filter material replacement, not all at once, need to be divided into two batches, two batches of interval time for 2 ~ 3 months;

Third, brush, filter cotton, biochemical felt, etc. It is recommended to clean once every 3 to 6 months; replace them in batches once every 2 to 4 years;

Fourth, the service life of all germicidal lamps are 8000 hours (international standards), but after 3000 hours of use, sterilization will weaken, it is recommended to replace;

Fifth, circulating pumps of good quality can be used for more than 5 years, if the water flow becomes small for a long time, take out and clean the impeller can be used (non-professionals, please do not dismantle yourself);

The above is the summary of our 16 years of experience in the construction of fish pond filtration system, I hope it will help you;
