It is important to pay attention to the environment of the pool and the appearance of the carp at all times, especially during periods of high koi appetite. In particular, the state of the leftover bait as well as the excrement must be carefully noted. If the bait is eaten in a normal state, but the excrement is floating, you should start to wonder if there is a problem.

In particular, the feeding stage is the time when floating stools tend to be produced. If this situation persists, in addition to adjusting the frequency and amount of bait fed, check the feeding environment and also pay attention to the state of the bubbling water surface. When the koi start to swim, check for any abnormalities in the pool equipment or inside the water body. Especially for the filter tank or settling tank, make sure that there is no sludge that has built up over the winter and clogged the screen of the filter tank. You should clean the filter tank once a month or so in winter.

And there are opinions among hobbyists as to when a major cleaning of the filter tanks and settling tanks should be implemented.

For example, some say to implement it a month after baiting begins. More desirably, when the bait feeding has reached a certain point and is on the track, it is possible to clean out the sludge that has accumulated over the winter along with it during the good weather before the rainy season. Remove the sludge from the cartridges or bottoms of the filter tanks, and clean the walls, etc., of the settling tanks, after which replace them with a larger quantity of fresh water, about one-half or one-third or so of the whole.

Or, you can wash the filter tank once before spring feeding begins if the tank is dirty. This time of year, cleaning the filter tank is as simple as removing the dirt that you didn't clean over the winter.

After replacing the water with new water and cleaning it, test the water quality by using a setback test, etc.

After feeding bait, excreta will also increase, so drainage of the bottom water should be carried out about once a day or so, and in order not to deteriorate the environment, be sure to remove any leftover residual bait or feces completely.

There are many ways to clean the filter tanks before bait feeding, April through May, before summer, or a combination of these conditions, but it is best to consult with a hobbyist or professional in the area before doing so.
